| Just what is The Brain-Pad? |
It is a revolutionary piece of protective gear that simply repositions the lower jaw down and slightly forward and locks it in a safety position so that impacts from sports keep the end of the jaw from getting slammed into the base of the skull and brain. |
| Does it require a dentist to custom fit? |
No, the Brain-Pad is easy to custom fit by boil-and-bite technique in a matter of minutes. It can be cut to proper size with scissors or a knife. |
| Is there a children's size? |
Yes, the Brain-Pad Junior. For 6-11 year olds. To adjust the size, the back portion is easily cut off and the edges trimmed (see Fitting Instructions). |
| Should the Brain-Pad be cut down as small as possible to make it more comfortable? |
No, smaller isn't necessarily better or more comfortable. Unlike regular mouthguards, the Protector is more comfortable when it covers all the teeth and the wearer gets used to it. In some cases the wearer will salivate more for the first couple of uses. This will go away. |
| Will I be able to breathe? |
Yes, absolutely! In fact the front airway will allow free airflow and lets the wearer talk better than with most mouthguards. This is because the structure of the Protector allows the wearer to get their tongue behind the front teeth and allows better articulation. |
| During the game I need to be able to communicate with my teammates. How well can I talk? |
The abiltiy to talk is there for everyone. How well depends on the individual. However, the starting and winning quarterback for the Univ. of Wisconsin called signals with his Brain Pad for the last 2 years, and Travis Hall of the Atlanta Falcons talks with his while he's on the field. |
| I have a bad gag reflex from wearing a mouthguard, what about the Brain-Pad ? |
Because the airway allows more air to flow and because of the structure of the Protector with side flanges that do not cover the gums and palate as much, most gaggers report much less problems with the Protector. It may take the user a period of time to adjust to it, but overall it creates less gagging. |
| How long will the Brain-Pad last? |
The Protector can easily last a full sport season or more. The wearer should take proper care of it by cleaning regularly and storing in the protective case. It is recommended that the Protector be replaced after each full sports season or as soon as the back portions are flattened out from clenching or chewing. And there are many athletes who have used the Protector for two or more sports seasons.
|
| Does it require special cleaning? |
Nothing special, but the Protector should be cleaned regularly with toothpaste or mouthwash or any anti-microbial cleaning agent. When not in use, it should be stored in its protective case. |
| How does the Brain-Pad protect better than amouthguard that is custom made by a dentist? |
Although dentist custom made mouthguards will generally fit the upper teeth better, the lower jaw is not locked away from the base of the skull and brain. With over-the-counter and custom upper mouthguards the lower jaw can easily get slammed into the delicate bones of the skull and ear canal. These impacts can cause damage that has symptoms that last long after the games are over. |
| Does the Protector come in different colors? |
Yes! Check the images on the ordering page. |
With Respect to Ice Hockey useage of your protector, I understand that USA Hockey rules (which most Ice Hockey associations must adhere to) requires a non-clear mouth guard and this year now requires the mouthgard to attach to the helmet facemask.
Do you have/plan models that meet the USA Hockey requirements? |
Yes. The internal colors and optional quick release strap version meet USA Hockey requirements. |
| Why does the strapped model have a strap that releases? |
The quick release strap is designed for helmeted sports and will easily pull away from the mouthpiece in the event that the helmet and/or facemask gets dislocated. This prevents the Protector from getting pulled out of the mouth where it might cause dental injury. When not in use the strap can be left attached to the helmet and the Protector should be stored in it's protective case. |
| What happens if I bite through the Protector in just a few weeks? |
Some athletes have a very strong bit due to highly developed jaw muscles. Give us a call and ask about the new high performance model that is made of a harder material. |
