NWFA Mandates Brain-Pad Mouth Guards To Reduce The Risk Of Concussions
Nov. 6, 2007 – Nashville TN. – Taking a proactive stance in injury prevention, Brain-Pad mouth guards are now mandated
for all participants of the National Women’s Football Association (NWFA), announced Executive Director Catherine Masters

“I feel that now our players will have a more complete head protection system -- the helmets for outer skull
protection and the Brain-Pad for internal head protection. It only makes sense for us to take advantage of this
technology and reduce the risk of concussion and any re-occurrence of prior head injury,” said Masters.
Masters says that anything we can do to reduce injuries to our players is important to the NWFA. With so much information and so many statistics available on the rate of concussions in sports, and how much of it is coming from jaw impacts, the decision to mandate the use of Brain-Pads was simple. She encourages other sports organizations to do the same.
Joseph Manzo, President of Brain-Pad, said he commended Masters and the NWFA for creating the Brain-Pad mandate in an effort to reduce concussions. Many sports organizations are spending big dollars researching the detection of sports concussions and predicting how long an athlete should stay out of play before returning.
“Since concussions are at epidemic levels in our sports community, this research is paramount and will ultimately benefit our players, especially younger athletes, in the prevention of second impact syndrome. We are very proud of the Catherine Masters and the NWFA and look forward to working with them long into the future,” says Manzo.
Masters is also taking a stance on the prevention side, trying to keep needless head injuries from her organization.
All NWFA participants will be issued the Brain-Pad mouth guards before their first practice of the 2008 season.
The National Women's Football Association has over 30 teams that will be playing this season from Maine to California.
