Protecting the base of the skull and TMJ with dual arch technology
Football Coach Daily Share Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Even with heightened attention on sports injuries, the prevalence of injuries
caused by impacts to the jaw or chin is often overlooked and outright ignored.
Protective equipment exists today that greatly reduces the forces transmitted
to the base of the skull and TMJ. In nearly two decades and three independent
biomechanical studies sponsored by NFL Charities and National Operating
Committee for Standards in Athletic Equipment in 1993, one performed by
Wayne State in 2005 and a study fully funded by the NFL with Biokinetics in
2011, the relative effectiveness of the dual arch mouth guard (more properly
identified as a "jaw-joint protector" as opposed to a "mouth guard" for
protecting teeth) was well established.

5th Medical Operations Squadron:
"Mouth guards also safeguard against serious injuries, such
as jaw fractures, cerebral hemorrhages, concussion and
neck injuries by helping to avoid situations where the lower jaw
jams into the upper jaw.
According to the CDC, mouth guards may prevent
200,000 oral injuries a year, reduce the risk
of concussion 50 percent and prevent
injury to the teeth by 60 percent.

TMJ Dis-orders: Overview
Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD)

Mouth guards and Contact sports:

"...The mandible is connected to the rest of the
skull by the temporalmandibular joint (TMJ),

a powerful hinge mechanism...In sports such
as ice hockey and American football,
blows to
the underside of the chin are common
. These
may lead to concussions, as the TMJ is driven
upward and backward by the mandible.

A protective mouth guard has been proven an
effective form of protection from the consequences
of these blows, as the mouth guard tends to
prevent the lower jaw from being forced back
into the skull.".
